The Viscount Lord Thurso PC MI
Lord Thurso is currently Chair of Scotland’s national tourist body Visit Scotland and a member of the House of Lords following careers in the hotel industry and politics. He is also HM Lord Lieutenant for Caithness.
Trained by the Savoy Group he managed their Paris Hotel before running a number of hospitality businesses. He was a non-executive director of the Savoy PLC, Deputy Chairman of Millennium and Copthorne PLC, Chair of Walker Greenbank PLC and sat on a number of other boards. He is a Fellow and Past Patron of the Institute of Hospitality, a Patron and Past Grand Master of the Keepers of The Quaich and chairs the International Wine & Spirit Competition.
The grandson of the wartime Liberal leader Sir Archibald Sinclair, he sat in the House of Lords from 1995-99 as a liberal and was a spokesman on Tourism, Food and Industry. The first hereditary to be elected to the Commons he was MP for Caithness Sutherland & Easter Ross from 2001-15. He held a number of spokesmanships, sitting in the shadow cabinet. He was a member of the CMS Select Committee 2001-05, Treasury Select Committee 2007-15 and a member of the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards. He Chaired the House Finance committee and was a Commissioner of the House of Commons. He was made a Privy Councillor in 2014.
