SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE RACE
Ever fancied yourself as a galloping gourmand? Could you shift your feet for a hundred yards in your livery gown? Can you muster a winning moment with a frying pan? And would you be prepared to do the above for the greater glory of the Worshipful Company of Innholders – and in the name of charity, of course?
Well, dear Innholder, this is your chance. We’re looking for volunteers to join us for the 13th annual Inter-Livery Pancake Race, which takes places on 28 February, in Guildhall Yard and organised by the Poulters’ Company. With races for open to Masters, the Livery, Ladies (open to female liveryman, freemen, partners and officers) and a Novelty race for those willing to try it in fancy dress, contestants are required to make a dash back and forth across the Guildhall Yard, having made a good fist of tossing their pancake at least twice before crossing the line. All contestants must do so in provided chefs hats, aprons and gloves, provided for the occasion.
By tradition, the Gunmakers provide the starting canon, the Clockmakers are timekeepers, the gloves come from the Glovemakers, while The Cook & The Butler, which organises the event in collaboration with the Poulters, provides the hats and aprons.
Those taking part will need to assemble at the Guildhall Yard for 11.30am, ahead of the first race which begins at 12noon. A buffet lunch is served afterwards in The Guildhall Crypt.
If you would like to join the Innholders’ team please contact the Clerk’s Office. For Innholders who are keen to join in the fun but understandably reticent about their physical preparedness remember there is still plenty of time to get in shape. Either that, or put it in the diary to cheer on the team; it’ll certainly make for a Shrove Tuesday to remember.
